Behavior Managment System "GOOD NEWS"

               "GOOD NEWS":  A Classroom System

Throughout the first month of school our class will focus on learning routines, following directions, and the cooperation skills necessary for a successful school year. The Memorial school faculty has established four expectations for behavior; Be Safe, Be Kind
Be Respectful and Be Responsible(Work Hard).
It will take some time to explicitly teach the students what each of those expectations looks like within the classroom and school community.  Ms. McMahon and I will implement a behavior system in order to motivate and encourage positive behavior in school. The system is designed to compliment positive behavior and motivate kids to make "good" choices. It is my belief, as an early childhood educator and parent, that kids feel proud and motivated when we teachers and parents praise their efforts.

Our class System is called "Good News" and here is how it works:

  • Each child in our class has a personal newspaper displayed on the wall. The paper is titled "Look Who Made the 'Good News".
  • Anytime a teacher spots a child doing a "Good Job" (following directions, being safe, working hard, helping a friend etc.), the teacher will say "Good News".
  • The child "caught being good" will then walk up to his/her personal newspaper and place a sticker on it.
  •  When a child makes the "Good News" five times (s)he earns a prize. The prize is a secret!!! It will be sent home in a mystery bag and is to be opened at home.
The prizes will start out as small trinkets and will eventually become coupons for classroom privileges such as; pet person, line leader, office helper, library book helper or show and tell friend. We will move toward a coupon system after we establish which privileges motivate this particular group of students.

Here's where we need your support.  When your child takes home his/her newspaper acknowledge them with with praise and compliments.
Ask your child about his/her news worthy behavior. Teachers will write a short description regarding one of the five times your child made the news. We hope this will help you to zoom in and have positive, meaningful conversations about behavior. Establishing a strong
home-school connection will help keep the students motivated by the system and feeling good about making "good" choices.

It is our opinion that if we communicate about the wonderful things we see kids doing all the time we can have developmentally appropriate conversations about areas of need if they should arise.

Thanks in advance for your support!!!
Nicole Mondello & Ms. McMahon
