Sight Words Week By Week

Each child has a red sight word folder. Each week we will orally quiz your child on the words, cumulatively. Please return the folder with any work that has been completed and the envelope so that we can add new words. Enclosed is a copy of the word list, introduction letter, and suggested activities that were included in the folders initially.

Suggested Sight Word Activities:

  1. Print the words on index cards and display them. Drill them daily, say , spell, and say the word again.
  2. Use magnetic letters and build the words one letter at a time.
  3. Make silly sentences with the words.
  4. Play “Hide-N- Seek” a sight word. Ask your child to write the words on sticky notes or small pieces of paper. Put the words in plastic eggs,( if you have some) and hide them around the house.
  5. Play, “I Spy”. Ask your child to look in the environment or in magazines for the weeks words.
  6. Highlight the sight words in a children’s magazine.
  7. Fill a shoebox with salt or flour and ask your child spell the word with his/her finger then read it. Shake the box and begin again. Be sure your child is looking at the correct spelling.

Introduction Letter

Dear Families,
As part of our literacy program, your child will be learning “kindergarten words”. These words are a combination of sight words; words that do not follow phonetic patterns/rules, and high frequency words; words that appear most frequently in emergent text. These words are important for children as they become writers. Learning these words by “sight”, without trying to sound(tap) them out is beneficial for building fluency and becoming a strong reader.
This red folder is a resource for you and your child. We will add five words at a time to the folder and check in with your child each week to measure progress and individualize word lists. The strategies enclosed mirror many of those we use in class. Each week I will add games or worksheets based on what your child returns. Use the activities at your own pace and let your child lead the way. Many of the suggested activities on the back of this note are engaging enough to play with older siblings.  We hope to add new word lists weekly following a successful written check in. When your child is able to read the words without hesitation and write most of the five we will send a new list home.
If your child is struggling, slow down and start with words that your child knows and add one word at a time.  Repetition is best. We will include index cards each week with the new words. Keep the cards together in the provided envelope and watch the pile grow. Please keep in mind that the kindergarten standard is 50 words.  You will find all of these words in enclosed. The words your child receives will exceed this list if your child has mastered the kindergarten list. Keep this fun, feel free to email me if you are having trouble or need clarification. “Hide and Seek Sight Words” is a family favorite.
